Do you have something in your house that has been broke for as long as you can remember? Well that was my toilet paper holder. My house is only 7 years old; things should not be falling apart but sometimes scat fails. My wife has been bugging me to fix it from the day we moved in (about 2 years ago). But it took starting this website to find time to fix it.
Here is a list of tools I used during this project:
- Square bit in the drill for the 2” screws
- Square bit screwdriver
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Small finishing hammer
- ¼” Drill bit
So let’s jump right in to it. Let me show you how bad this was. This movie shows the TP holder before and after the repair.
This was installed totally wrong. Just to use it we had to pull real gentle to keep the roll from falling out. The problem was that when it was installed they only used 2 drywall anchors instead of using the correct hardware. Part of the issue is that the left bracket is directly in front of a stud so the anchor did not work right. The other 2 screws were just screwed directly into the drywall. As you can see in the pictures the drywall material around both anchors has been broken free and is ready to fall right out.
Now that I have completed the disassembly and can better understand the damage and anchoring requirements I can get the correct hardware. Here is the repair plan. Because these brackets and screws are hidden and because it would be a complete waste of time, I am not going to take the time to fix the drywall. I found that the left bracket is directly in front of a stud so I am going to use longer screws to reach the studs. I will use a Toggle Bolt and a standard drywall anchor and screw for the right bracket.

If the person who did the initial install had just took a few minutes to do it right the first time I would have nothing to blog about.
